Solar-Lit Trails

Snow covered solar-lit trail at night

Having a hard time getting outside in nature now that the sun sets earlier? Take an evening hike on solar-lit trails in your forest preserves. With small solar lights to guide their way, hikers, skiers and snowshoers can get some brisk evening exercise. View the solar-lit trails in the status map below.

Hours and Locations

Preserve trails are open 6:30 am–sunset, daily. Extended hours are available during daylight savings time along solar lighted trails at Old School in Libertyville and along a section of the Millennium Trail adjacent to the Winter Sports Area at Lakewood in Wauconda. The illuminated trails and adjacent parking lots remain open after sunset until 9 pm, daily, early November–early March.

Bicycles and horses are not permitted on the solar-lit trails after sunset. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed.

The solar lights serve as a guide along the trails. It is recommended to bring a flashlight or headlamp along for additional illumination.
