Heron Creek Shelter B Reservation

Bring your family and friends for a picnic at Heron Creek Forest Preserve in Long Grove and enjoy being outdoors in a country-like setting.
This shelter is adjacent to a large playfield. An innovative playground is also nearby and is shared with all preserve visitors. It provides a colorful series of tunnels, slides, ladders, bridges, decks and swings for children to climb and explore. The playground has two separate areas, one for children ages 2–5, and one for children ages 5–12. Much of the playground is ramped for handicapped accessibility. There is also a sand pit for children to dig in and create sculptures, and lookout stations with views into the woods. Picnickers also have access to the preserve's trails, which feature interpretive signs that teach about the landscape.
Access the shelter from the preserve's entrance on the southwest corner of Route 22 and Old McHenry Road.
