Countryside Golf Club is maintained in a manner that pleases both the golfers and the wildlife that share the grounds. Its dedication to environmentally sound practices has once again been recognized by Audubon International. The not-for-profit environmental education organization recently recertified the 476-acre course as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary

"We manage the course in a way that allows plants and wildlife to thrive alongside the game of golf,” said Alex Eichman, Golf Operations Manager for the Lake County Forest Preserves. “Course habitats provide food, water and shelter. We have nesting boxes for birds, ducks and bats. Fields are planted with native wildflowers and grasses.”

To earn certification, course ownership must demonstrate it is maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management. Countryside Golf Club is one of 49 Illinois courses to earn the honor.

"Countryside Golf Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property," said Doug Bechtel, Executive Director of Audubon International.

Certified courses go through a recertification process every two years. Countryside Golf Club has been fully certified since 1996.
