Kids ages 10-14 years-old will learn to make a sewn quilt block! We'll have a family-friendly interactive talk about historical quilts from Lake County and their importance as an art medium. Then explore the exhibit Threads of Time afterwards on your own. Let your child explore the world of textile arts through this workshop!

This workshop is held in collaboration with The WasteShed

The WasteShed's mission is to increase access to art education, achieved by offering an organized, affordable, and reliable resource for repurposed art, craft, and school materials. Through our dynamic centers, located in Evanston and Chicago, The WasteShed offers activities related to sustainability and material culture. We connect people who are interested in:

  •  living more sustainably

  •  seeking inspiration in unconventional materials

  •  getting the most out of the resources they have on hand

  •  or just making projects at a low cost.

In other words, The WasteShed provides a resource for gently used or surplus art supplies. In addition to the materials depots, the organization provides arts education and upskilling workshops through an environmental lens, with programs providing training in creative reuse and waste prevention.

WasteShed Teaching Artists:

Blair Goldman is a Chicago-based fashion designer and sewing instructor. Her work can be seen on celebrities like Lizzo, Dodie, and Dorian Electra. When she’s not teaching or designing for the stage, she creates team mascots for the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB.

Camille Townson (they/them) is a seamster and archivist based in southwest Chicago. Their lifelong mending practice is rooted in care and ecofeminist principles. You can explore their reuse-based design work at childrenofcompost.com.

Feel free to arrive early before the workshop starts or stay after the workshop ends to explore the special exhibit Threads of Time: Quilts and Textiles on your own. The program includes museum admission only for children registered for the program. Admission for any additional adults and children can be paid for at the museum front desk.
