For this workshop, we will all have a chance to learn various repair techniques and free-form stitches as we work on a vintage quilt. There will be no right or wrong, only a chance to enjoy the act of mending collectively. You are encouraged to bring a piece of clothing or belonging that needs repair. We will work together to find the best and most creative way to repair it!

This workshop is held in collaboration with The WasteShed

The WasteShed's mission is to increase access to art education, achieved by offering an organized, affordable, and reliable resource for repurposed art, craft, and school materials. Through our dynamic centers, located in Evanston and Chicago, The WasteShed offers activities related to sustainability and material culture. We connect people who are interested in:

  •  living more sustainably

  •  seeking inspiration in unconventional materials

  •  getting the most out of the resources they have on hand

  •  or just making projects at a low cost.

In other words, The WasteShed provides a resource for gently used or surplus art supplies. In addition to the materials depots, the organization provides arts education and upskilling workshops through an environmental lens, with programs providing training in creative reuse and waste prevention.

WasteShed Teaching Artist:

Layne Jackson is a multi-media artist, working with paint and textiles. From memories of a grandmother who often had felt and beads in hand and a mother who sewed efficiently comes a love of all things sewn, stitched, woven, and especially lovingly mended. There is so much waste and many wonderful things that can be saved with attention. Layne is also part of a ten-year sewing collective that meets monthly to work together and share textile and stitch projects. http://www.laynejackson.com

Feel free to arrive early before the workshop starts or stay after the workshop to explore the special exhibit Threads of Time: Quilts and Textiles on your own. Registration includes museum admission.
